Network Speed Trials Speed

A tool to sample the speed of accessing files over the network to and from the carefreecomputing.org web site.

Prerequisites on the client system, the one you're browsing this page with:

  • A personal web server
  • A writeable directory (folder) on the client web browser machine
  • PHP installed and PHP scripts executable from the writeable directory

Now configure the speed trial:

  • Please enter the URL of the writeable folder:
  • Test results will (optionally) be e-mailed to:
  • Total number of runs in this trial:
  • Minutes to elapse between each run:

The Trial

  1. Three blocks of data, a results template, and a PHP program are copied into the writeable directory you specified above
  2. (This may take a few minutes)
  3. Each run copies the three blocks of data from your machine to the server and copies three similar blocks back to your machine, timing each block.
  4. A note is made of the timings and, if more runs are needed, after the specified delay the next run begins.
  5. Upon completing the specified number of runs a file with the timings and averages is written to the writeable directory and results are e-mailed to you at the address specified
  6. The data blocks and scripts are left in the writeable directory in case you want to run another trial later
